A woman is dead, a little girl is in hospital with injuries to her head, and the main suspect was shot by police near the corner of Joyce and Kingsway Monday morning.
Two VPD officers shot a 33-year-old male after they busted into an apartment and found him armed with a knife next to a dead body at 3319 Kingsway Ave. in Vancouver, according to the Independent Investigations Office.
Police say the two officers attempted to speak with the suspect, but the situation escalated and they shot the man.
“The man was shot, he was taken to hospital, the young girl that was crying in the hallway, she’s believed to be about five- or six-years-old, she was taken to (BC) Children’s Hospital with some injuries, they’re not considered life-threatening,” said VPD spokesperson Brian Montague.
Police received a call around 10:30 a.m. with reports of a young child crying, a man yelling, and a description of blood in the hallways of the apartment building.
A neighbour who identified himself only as Ron said it was his girlfriend who made the call.
“I was at school and my girlfriend called,” Ron said. “She said she heard the baby in the hallway crying for about 30 minutes, so I told her don’t get involved but stick your head out, and she said she saw blood when she stuck her head out.”
Gurinder Sodhi, who owns several units in the building and works underneath it, said he heard four gunshots after police arrived, and he saw the little girl being put into an ambulance.
“She was conscious, she was alive,” he said. “But the guy who was taken away, he was bleeding all over the place.”
Police could not confirm, but neighbours described the man as having a mental illness.
The identity of the suspect, the woman and the girl were not released.
