It’s not just a film, it’s a movement.
At least that’s what Vancouver filmmaker Cari Green is pushing for with her new dramatic short film Citizen Jane – a movie following fictitious Private Jane Cross as she is interrogated by a man named Captain Summers following an affair she had with her senior female officer.
The story was inspired by the real life discharge of former officer Michelle Douglas, who sued the Canadian Forces in 1992 and ultimately overturned the ban against gays and lesbians in the military.
But that’s just the film. Green is petitioning the federal government to formally apologize to all LGBT soldiers who have been discharged dishonourably and to restore their subsequently lost benefits.
“I think you can only move forward once you’ve learned your history and accepted it,” Green said.
Green is working on getting the film distributed with an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign that ends Nov. 27.
